4 WAYS TO BRING PRESENCE TO YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON

Posted

Life isn’t perfect and never will be, but by taking the time to plan ahead, be proactive about our finances, take care of ourselves, and set some boundaries this year, we can definitely go a long way in reducing our stress level and actually enjoying the spirit of the season! Stave off stress this holiday season with these four simple yogic lifestyle principles.

TIP #1 - PLAN AHEAD

PREP A HOLIDAY CALENDAR and make a game plan of which events are most important to attend. Everyone loses when you are stressed out in traffic because you’re triple booked every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night in December. Get organized by have a meeting with your partner/family/kids about what are the most meaningful activities so you know which events/activities are high priority.

TIP #2 - KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

DESIGN A HOLIDAY BUDGET and make your list so you can check it twice!! Your list should include the major dinner parties, social engagements, baking projects, gifts, money for cab fare, and my favorite - “holiday hiccups”. We all know that happy hours start earlier and end way later in the month of December, right?

The key to your holiday budget is so that you’re aware of what you have to work with, and you don’t ignore your finances at the busiest time of year.

TIP #3 - PRACTICE SELF CARE

Do less so you can do more. Remember to rest properly, hydrate with lemon water, exercise, indulge wisely, and chew your food thoroughly. Stop competing with your neighbour to throw the perfect Christmas party and give yourself some breathing room already! Remember what’s important: to be present in the moment, and to create memories for a lifetime.

TIP #4 - ESTABLISH FIRM BOUNDARIES

Saying no means saying yes. Spending time with your folks can be stressful because it means old issues get resurfaced. Be smart, and walk away from confrontation before it gets worse. Even better, maybe stay sober for that really big family dinner where ‘you know who’ is going to talk about ‘you know what’. When the conversations turn in a negative direction, try to shift the focus on the blessings that our families have brought into our lives.

No matter what we choose to do over the holidays, let’s try to keep our priorities in focus and simply take things one day at a time. As we end the year and start anew, it’s a beautiful time for change and inspiration. Life isn’t perfect and never will be, but by taking the time to plan ahead, be proactive about our finances, take care of ourselves, and set some boundaries this year, we can definitely go a long way in reducing our stress level and actually enjoying the spirit of the season.
